SWEP & SIWES RULES AND REGULATIONS

Introduction

The authorities of the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) approved of the Students Work Experience Programme (SWEP) and Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), for Nigerian Universities and other institutions of higher learning; for its students to undergo various training in their respective fields of studies. These schemes were brought about by the inadequate practical experience gained by the students in higher institutions after graduation, due to various factors such as: lack of relevant equipments and machineries in their institutions, etc. It is therefore mandatory for all students offering relevant courses in Nigerian higher institutions to undergo the SWEP and SIWES program at their assigned period (level) and through the stipulated duration.

Definitions

SWEP – Students Work Experience Programme is a programme aim at providing the participating Engineering students the practical skills of general workshop and safety practices in the use of tools and equipments, as they are obtainable in the real world of Engineering practices. It is carried out within the school. The SWEP covers all the areas/department in engineering; each engineering student is to carry out activities covering all other engineering fields other than their major.

SIWES – Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme is a programme aim at preparing the students for the real industrial work situations they will meet after graduation: so they will properly fit into it. It helps bridge the gap between theory and practice by providing students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in real work situations. It is carried out in industries outside the school.

Relationship Between Swep And Siwes

They are both training programmes: SWEP is the first module, while SIWES is the second.

Duration

In NTNU, SWEP duration is 10 weeks;SWEP I, 4 weeks during the long vacation after second semester 200 level and SWEP II, 4 weeks during the long vacation after second semester 300 level. SIWES duration is 6 months, during the second semester for 400 level students.

Credit Unit And Graduation Requirement
